Why Can't I See 5G in the Status Bar on My iPhone?

Check to ensure your device supports the 5G network. Here are the steps to check if your iPhone supports 5G:

Check 5G Support on iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap "Cellular" or "Mobile Data".
  3. Tap "Cellular Data Options" or "Mobile Data Options".
  4. Tap "Voice & Data".
  5. Look for the "5G Standalone" or "5G On" option. If you see this toggle, your iPhone supports 5G.5
  6. If the toggle is off, turn it on to enable 5G connectivity.

Here's what the different 5G settings on iPhone mean:

5G Auto

  • Enables "Smart Data" mode
  • Your iPhone will automatically switch between 5G and 4G LTE networks
  • It will use 5G only when it won't significantly reduce battery life
  • This helps conserve battery by using 4G LTE when 5G speeds don't provide a noticeably better experience

5G On

  • Your iPhone will always try to connect to a 5G network when available
  • It will use 5G even if it reduces battery life
  • Provides the full 5G experience but may drain battery faster

5G Standalone (5G SA)

  • Allows your iPhone to connect directly to the 5G core network without using the 4G LTE network
  • Provides lower latency and higher throughput compared to non-standalone (NSA) 5G mode23
  • Required to access the full capabilities of 5G like network slicing, ultra-low latency, etc.
  • Only available if your carrier has deployed a standalone 5G core network

If you still dont see the 5G icon in the status bar, there could be several reasons behind it:

Carrier Compatibility

Not all carriers have rolled out 5G networks yet. If your carrier doesn't offer 5G service, you won't see the 5G icon, even if you have a 5G-capable iPhone.

Coverage Area

5G networks are still being built out, and coverage can be limited, especially in rural areas. If you're in a location without 5G coverage from your carrier or the signal is too weak, your iPhone will connect to the next available network (4G LTE, 3G, etc.), and you won't see the 5G icon.

iPhone Model

Only iPhone 12 and later models support 5G connectivity. If you have an older iPhone model, you won't see the 5G icon, even with a 5G-compatible eSIM.

Software Updates

Sometimes, a carrier settings update or iOS software update is required to enable 5G connectivity on your iPhone. Check for any available updates and install them.
